Schnebly: a paradise of food, wine, and beer.

written by wilfredo dominguez

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in South Florida, there is a place called Schnebly, the Southernmost winery in the USA.

This unique restaurant-winery-brewery hodgepodge is located in a neighborhood populated by farmers, immigrant laborers, retirees, and a few scattered hermits. The  Homestead General Airport is its closest neighbor.

Schnebly is not your typical restaurant-winery-brewery combo, though. Do not expect to come down here just to dine-out and taste a few exotic beers and wines. As a matter of fact, your first visit should be more like a lunch-out for you want to keep your eyes open. Peacocks, iguanas, turtles, and squirrels freely roam the area.  Thus, taking a relaxing walk after lunch may prove to be an unforgettable experience.

One-of-a-kind lunch.

The neighboring farms are the main suppliers to Schnebly's kitchen. The dishes served at the restaurant certainly sound exotic but there is nothing unnatural about them. Not a hint! Everything tastes the way it should. Natural! Flamboyant tacos, fish dishes with fancy names, and the aromatic smell of freshly cut herbs added to every plate make up a one-of-kind menu. Be aware, cooks at Schnebly are not contrived by rules enforced by upper management. Expect a lot of creativity. I often talk to one of the kitchen managers and the answer to my perennial question, What's new today? is always the same. I don't know. We'll see.

Now, at Schnebly, food goes together with beer and wine.

Just not any beer or any wine. The master brewer, Aldo, a Colombian born to brew, will make it easy for you, though. Say what you like, bitter, sweet, dry, European, spicy. He's got it! I recently overheard he is now working on his finest wine yet. Just like that, if you are a wine lover, you have certainly come to the right place. You will try the first wine ever made with avocados, or sample exquisite wines made with guava, lychee, mango, and so many more!

Schnebly's Redland Winery ships wine all over the U.S.A. You can order anytime online. Yet, if wine is your real thing, joining The Wine Club is a no-brainer. Every four months you get two bottles of wine, tasting notes, and Wine Key First Shipment with the Elite Membership. The Premium Club at $60 gets you four bottles of wine and VIP Membership.

If you are all about beer, Schnebly won't disappoint you, either. The Beer Garden is the place to go. I already lost count of the many brews available. It is like that guy, Aldo, imagines a new brew first thing in the morning every morning!!!

The Garden is usually packed, but parking space is aplenty. Still, remember, you are in the middle of nowhere. That's why, if you are not planning on driving your own car and riding Uber or Lyft is your weapon of choice, I would personally recommend the latter. Lyft offers a "pick-up" scheduling option.

The Beer Garden. Enjoy it!
